A sublimated water atmosphere on Ganymede detected from Hubble Space Telescope observations

چکیده
Ganymede's atmosphere is produced by charged particle sputtering and sublimation of its icy surface. Previous far-ultraviolet observations the O{\small I\,}1356-{\AA} I\,}1304-{\AA} oxygen emissions were used to infer sputtered molecular (O$_2$) as an atmospheric constituent, but expected sublimated water (H$_2$O) component remained undetected. Here we present analysis high-sensitivity spectra spectral images acquired Hubble Space Telescope revealing H$_2$O in atmosphere. The relative intensity requires contributions from dissociative excitation vapor, indicating that more abundant than O$_2$ around sub-solar point. Away region, are consistent with a pure Eclipse constrain atomic be at least two orders magnitude less these other species. higher H$_2$O/O$_2$ ratio above warmer trailing hemisphere compared colder leading hemisphere, spatial concentration estimated abundance $\sim$10$^{15}$ H$_2$O/cm$^{2}$ surface source.

COSMOS : Hubble Space Telescope Observations
The Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) was initiated with an extensive allocation (590 orbits in Cycles 12-13) using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) for high resolution imaging. Here we review the characteristics of the HST imaging with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and parallel observations with NICMOS and WFPC2. A square field (1.8⊓⊔) has been imaged with single-orbit ACS I-F814W expos...
متن کاملIntelligent Scheduling of Hubble Space Telescope Observations
This paper describes the S PIKE system, a general framework for scheduling which has been developed by the Space Telescope Science Institute for NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Efficient use of astronomical observatories is very important to the scientific community: the demand for research-grade telescopes far exceeds the supply. The need for efficient scheduling is especially keen for sp...
متن کاملGalactic Bulges from Hubble Space Telescope Nicmos Observations: Nuclear Properties
Using Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS images, we analyze the structural properties of bulges of S0-Sbc galaxies down to scales of ∼10 pc. Isophotal profiles are matched with those from widerfield, ground-based K-band images enabling us to sample from the nucleus to the disk-dominated region of each galaxy, and thus to include proper bulge-disk decompositions in the analysis. The majority of galax...
متن کاملAsteroid observations with the Hubble Space Telescope ? FGS ? ?
We present the results of the observations of five Main Belt asteroids and one Trojan obtained using the Fine Guidance Sensors (FGS) of the Hubble Space Telescope. For each object, estimates of the spin axis orientation, angular size and overall shape, as well as possible indications of a binary structure, are derived. This enables the computation of new physical ephemerides. While the data con...
متن کاملConstraints on Cosmological Models from Hubble Space Telescope Observations of High-z Supernovae
We have coordinated Hubble Space Telescope photometry with ground-based discovery for three supernovae: two SN Ia near z ∼ 0.5 (SN 1997ce, SN 1997cj) and a third event at z = 0.97 (SN 1997ck). The superb spatial resolution of HST separates each supernova from its host galaxy and leads to good precision in the light curves. The HST data combined with ground-based photometry provide good temporal...
